Now Don Jesús has arrived at Conchita again. He has decided not to bring his boat Amorua here because it is “too dangerous.” His boat was outfitted here—completely rebuilt—and afterward she was stripped of all her new gear by pirates, aided and abetted by the then watchman.

I owe it to Don Jesús to help him, as much as we in Outward Leg can, to resolve his leak problem. Then Amorua will have to wait until we can find a good, hardworking, honest sailor somewhere who will be willing to come to Santa Marta and help prepare Amorua for sea and sail her around the world. We both know, Don Jesús and I, that there are a host of young men who might jump at the opportunity to live here on board a boat in the tropics without expense, but we also know that whoever does come must be prepared for long hours of hard work and be capable of solving all the worrisome problems of outfitting a vessel in an as yet undeveloped country, along with people who are relatively inexperienced and unaware of the demands of the sea.

I have told Wally and Ivan to prepare the boat for sailing on Thursday morning. We shall leave Conchita and head for Tacanga, where we shall be much closer to Santa Marta, yet not under the vulture eye of the Port Captain, and from where we can try to solve the problem of the leak in Amorua’s keel.

We shall also, I hope, be safer from the possibility of pirate attack for the first time in a month.
